When is the best time to book a cruise depends on several factors. To determine when is the best time for you personally, you should consider the factors below:

Where you want to go.

Do you want to cruise the Mediterranean? North Europe? Caribbean? Asia? Or perhaps Antarctica? Each destination has its ‘best time’ to visit it. But it also depends on what you expect from your cruise which brings us to the next factor to consider.

Your preferences.

Do you want to sunbathe while on the ship? Go for a swim during shore excursions? If so, you should obviously book a cruise when the temperatures are high enough for swimming and water activities. Keep in mind, however, that the Southern Hemisphere has winter when the Northern Hemisphere has summer. If you don’t like the summer heat, you should seek for deals in late spring or early autumn.

Climate/weather.

They don’t only determine whether you will be able to swim. They also play an important role in the overall experience not only in terms of good/bad weather but also what you’ll see and experience. For example, to observe wildlife and natural phenomena such as the Northern Lights, you need to be on the right place at the right time.

Cruising with children.

If you want to take the entire family to a cruise, the best time to do so are probably school or summer holidays. Keep in mind, however, that the vast majority of families are going on a holiday at the same time. Why does this matter? Because there may be a limited number of cabins for more than 3 persons and because some cruise ships limit the number of children per sailing. To get your space, you are therefore recommended to book early.

Price.

If you’re looking for special deals, the timing is everything in terms of both the departure and booking. No matter which destination you choose, you’ll always pay less during off- and shoulder-season. But remember that high season in Southern Hemisphere is just the opposite to that in Northern Hemisphere. Again, no matter which destination you choose, the price will depend greatly on when you book as well. If you want to pay less, you are recommended to either book early (the earlier the better) or consider waiting for the last minute deals.
